The analysis of the impact and pollution of the mining industry on the environment: a comparison of environmental pollution in the Copperbelt province of (Zambia) with the Katanga region (DRC)

Most of the minerals mined in Africa come from the region defined by the Neoproterozoic Katanga sedimentary basin in the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and in the north of Zambia. It includes the Copperbelt Province of Zambia (areas near the cities of Ndola, Kitwe, Chingola, Luanshya and Mufulira) and the province of Upper Katanga (areas near the cities of Lubumbashi, Kolwezi and Likasi). The increase in global demand for mineral raw materials has led to an increase in mining. This mining activity has significant social, health and environmental impacts. Mining has led to air, water and land pollution. Water pollution is the most common problem associated with mine waste and hazardous materials used or generated as a result of mining activities. Other major environmental problems associated with mining are pollution of atmospheric air, soil and water, and land degradation. The impact of mining is the result of mining operations carried out both in the past and in the present. This study analyzes the environmental impact of mining activities in two regions.
