Grassroots violence in religious conflicts between Catholics and members of other confessions in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: 1632 - 1700

Abstract

Данная работа посвящена изучению феномена религиозного насилия на низовом уровне со стороны католиков по отношению к представителям других конфессий в Речи Посполитой с 1632 (после смерти Сигизмунда III) по 1700 год (начало Северной войны). Цель исследования – проанализировать с разных сторон и установить причины, цели, мотивы и основных действующих лиц в актах насилия на низовом уровне со стороны католиков по отношению к представителям других конфессий в религиозных конфликтах в Речи Посполитой в 1632-1700 гг. В ходе исследования автор изучил и установил основные формы, которые приобретало религиозное насилие на низовом уровне, а также попытался выяснить мотивацию субъектов насилия в различных ситуациях. В качестве вывода констатируется тот факт, что представители католического населения, участвовавшие в актах религиозного насилия на низовом уровне по отношению к «иноверцам», были ведомы господствовавшими в XVI-XVII вв. религиозными доктринами, а также представлениями о «должном» и «справедливом» устройстве общества. Особая интенсификация низового насилия на конфессиональной почве со стороны католиков в Речи Посполитой XVII века была обусловлена тем, что данное государственное образование было очень многонациональным и поликонфессиональным, и не случайно, что значительная часть всплесков религиозного насилия имела место в городах и местечках, где религиозные различия были более заметными.

This work is devoted to the study of the phenomenon of religious violence at the grassroots level by Catholics in relation to representatives of other faiths in the Commonwealth from 1632 (after the death of Sigismund III) to 1700 (the beginning of the Great Northern War). The purpose of the study is to analyze from different points of view and to determine the causes, goals, motives and main actors in acts of violence at the grassroots level by Catholics against the representatives of other faiths in religious conflicts in the Commonwealth in 1632-1700. The author studied and determined the main forms that religious violence acquired at the grassroots level, and also tried to figure out the motivation of the subjects of violence in various situations. As a conclusion, it is stated that the representatives of the Catholic population who participated in the acts of religious violence at the grassroots level in relation to the "gentiles" were led by the religious doctrines that prevailed in the 16th-17th centuries, as well as ideas about the "proper" and "fair" structure of society. The special intensification of grassroots violence on confessional grounds by Catholics in the Commonwealth of the 17th century was due to the fact that this state entity was very multinational and multi-confessional, and it is no coincidence that a significant part of the outbursts of religious violence took place in cities and towns where religious differences were more visible.
