Abstract

Александр Рафаилович Кугель – известный театральный критик конца XIX - начала XX века. Работа представляет собой комплексное исследование его личности и деятельности. В частности, был изучен журнал «Театр и искусство», созданный Кугелем и театр «Кривое зеркало», где он являлся бессменным художественным руководителем. Кроме того была рассмотрена эпоха, повлиявшая на формирование взглядов критика. Александр Рафаилович был приверженцем актерского театра, поддерживал реалистические начала и боролся со многими исканиями Серебряного века, разрушающими по его мнению основы театра, так критик был одним из главных противников МХТ и театральной эстетики Мейерхольда. Его журнал и его театр были своеобразными инструментами театральной критики. «Театр и искусство» на протяжении 20 лет отстаивал интересы актерской массы и поднял статус актера от наемного работника до интеллигента. «Кривое зеркало», в свою очередь, через пародию высмеивало закосневшие штампы театрального искусства, и это одно может опровергнуть обвинения Кугеля в консерватизме.
