Visualizing the "island of Scandia": the image of Scandinavia in European cartography of the 15th - 16th centuries

Abstract

Цель работы заключается в том, чтобы проследить эволюцию образа Скандии в европейской картографической традиции XV-XVI вв. В первой главе рассматривается трансформация понятия Север как ментального конструкта с античности до настоящего времени. Выделяются идеи, формирующие образ Скандии в нарративной и картографической традиции античного времени и периода раннего и высокого Средневековья. Во второй главе на основе анализа европейских карт выделяется четыре обобщенных типа изображения Скандинавского полуострова, сложившихся в период с начала XV до конца XVI столетия. Предлагается четыре модели ментальных карт, характерных для каждого типа. Рассматривается образ Скандии, предложенный О. Магнусом в «История северных народов». В заключении сделаны выводы о влиянии традиций античного и раннесредневекового времени на изображение Скандинавии XV-XVI вв., а также о трансформации изображения и восприятия полуострова на протяжении двух столетий. Делается вывод о роли мифической составляющей на картах Скандинавского полуострова на рубеже XVII столетия.

The aim of the work is to trace the evolution of the way Scandia was mapped in European cartography during the 15th and 16th centuries. The first chapter examines the transformation of the concept of the North as a mental construction from the ancient times till now. The ideas shaping the image of Scandia in the narrative and mapping tradition of the ancient times and the early and high Middle Ages are highlighted. The second chapter, based on the analysis of European maps, provides the four generalized types of mapping the Scandinavian peninsula which developed during the early 15th through the late 16th centuries. Four models of mental maps characteristic for each type are presented. The image of Scandia proposed by O. Magnus in his “A Description of the Northern Peoples” is considered. In the end some conclusions are made about the influence of the ancient and early Middle Ages traditions on the way Scandinavia used to be mapped in the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as how the mapping and perception of the peninsula changed during these two centuries. A conclusion is made regarding the mythological component of the maps of the Scandinavian peninsula at the turn of the 17th century.
