The theory of European integration: Before and after the Brexit

Abstract

Результаты референдума в Великобритании в 2016 году показали, что современные теории оказались неспособны правильно описать и предсказать природу изменений в ЕС. Brexit стал прецедентом в международной системе, когда государство сознательно покидает интеграционный проект. Это в значительной степени пошатнуло фундаментальные теории интеграции (неофункционализм, интерговерментализм, институционализм) и дало импульс для разработки новых направлений в теории и дискуссии. Данное исследование предлагает рассмотреть взаимозависимость теории европейской интеграции и реального политического процесса - Brexit.

Results of a referendum in Great Britain in 2016 showed that modern theories were incapable to describe and predict the nature of changes in the EU correctly. Brexit became a precedent in the international system when the state consciously leaves the integration project. It substantially shook fundamental theories of integration (neofunctionalism, intergovermentalizm, institutionalism) and gave an impulse for development of the new directions in the theory and discussion. This research suggests to consider interdependence of the European integration theory and the real political process - Brexit.
