The factor of Independence referendums in changing the status of separatist regions in Europe as illustrated by Scotland and Catalonia

Abstract

Настоящая работа посвящена роли референдумов о независимости, проведенных в Шотландии и Каталонии в 2014 и 2017 годах, в изменении статуса регионов. Цель работы заключается в проведении сравнительного анализа референдумов о независимости Шотландии и Каталонии и определении их воздействия на современные отношения регионов с центром и Европейским союзом. В рамках исследования рассматриваются истории формирования шотландской и каталонской коллективных идентичностей, характеризуются основные конституирующие их элементы, проводится сравнительный анализ исследуемых идентичностей. Затем анализируются процессы перехода Шотландии и Каталонии от национализма к сепаратизму, сравниваются различные аспекты подготовки и проведения референдумов, оценивается их влияние на отношения регионов с центральными правительствами и Европейским союзом. Анализ идентичностей Шотландии и Каталонии, а также референдумов о независимости проводится с помощью инструментария конструктивистского подхода.

The study is devoted to the role of the referendums on independence held in Scotland and Catalonia in 2014 and 2017 with regard to the change of their status. The aim of the study is to hold a comparative analysis on the referendums on independence held in Scotland and Catalonia and to define what was their influence on the current relationships of the separatist regions with the central governments and the European Union. Firstly, the study defines and compares the processes of the formation of the collective identities of Scotland and Catalonia as well as the key elements that contribute to the construction of the identities. Secondly, the study analyses the transformation of the Scottish and Catalan nationalisms into separatisms, compares various aspects of preparing for and holding the referendums on independence. Furthermore, a comparative analysis is held with respect to the referendums on independence, and the influence of the referendums on the relationships of Scotland and Catalonia with central governments and the European Union is assessed. The analysis on the collective identities as well as on the referendums on independence is held by means of the constructivist approach instruments.
