The role of human rights in the Russian-British relations from 2000 to 2015

Abstract

Данная исследовательская работа посвящена теме защиты прав человека в международных отношениях, в частности в отношениях между Россией и Великобританией. Хотя на первый взгляд может показаться очевидным, что Великобритания является ведущим защитником прав человека из этих двух стран, данная работа ставит это под сомнение. Кратко анализируется процесс становления прав человека как института в обеих странах, дается обзор структуры правовых систем этих стран. Кроме того, рассматривается процесс сотрудничества между двумя государствами в области прав человека и кратко описывается характер такого сотрудничества. Автор приходит к выводу, что Россия и Великобритания не придерживаются современных стандартов защиты прав человека и используют случаи их нарушения в качестве политического и экономического рычага воздействия на международной арене. Любой шанс восстановить прежнее взаимное уважение и плодотворное сотрудничество кажется утраченным на ближайшее будущее в пользу политической борьбы за влияние в Европе и остальном мире.

This research paper covers the topic of human rights protection in international relations, namely in relations between Russia and the United Kingdom. While it may at first glance seem obvious that Britain is the leading human rights advocate out of the two - this paper calls into question that belief. The formation process of human rights as an institution in both countries is analysed in brief and an overview is given to the structure of the countries' legal systems. This paper then goes on to look into the cooperation process between the two states in the field of human rights and a summary is given to the character of said cooperation. The author concludes that Russia and the United Kingdom have failed to hold up to the modern standards of human rights champions and are using cases of human rights violations as political and economic leverage on the international arena. Any chance to restore previous mutual respect and fruitful cooperation seems lost for the near future in a political power struggle for influence in Europe and the rest of the world.
