Humor in the series "The Big Bang Theory": Issues of translation into Russian

Abstract

Юмор в сериале “Теория Большого взрыва»: проблемы перевода на русский язык Настоящее исследование направлено на выявление культурного своеобразия комического эффекта и анализ переводческих решений, обусловленных культурной спецификой механизмов формирования юмора, на примере американского сериала «Теория Большого взрыва». В данной работе впервые применяется методология фреймовой семантики для анализа качества перевода. В качестве материала исследования была выбрана шестая серия пятого сезона американского ситкома «Теория Большого взрыва». В ходе исследования было выяснено, что использование фреймового анализа необходимо для определения роли маркеров темы в языковом механизме комического. С помощью фреймового анализа мы выяснили, что языковой механизм комического маркеров Темы “Religion” основывается на введение маркеров Темы в несовместимые с ней контексты, а также за счет введения маркеров, которые противоречат продвигаемому Идеалу. В теме “Family and friends” комизм создается за счет разной интерпретации персонажами маркеров, соответствующих Идеалу и противоречащих ему. В теме “Racial equality” комизм возникает за счет использования разными персонажами маркеров, которые неприемлемы с точки зрения тематического императива, и маркеров, которые приемлемы в рамках данной Темы и приемлемого Идеала. В теме “Academic intellectualism” комизм возникает за счет сочетания противоречивых маркеров в репликах одного персонажа - маркеров приемлемого Идеала и маркеров, противоречащих императиву Темы. При переводе на русский язык чаще всего формально удается сохранить юмористический прием оригинала, однако передать структуру комизма оригинальных идеалов удается не до конца в связи с отсутствием некоторых культурных реалий в культуре ПЯ и выбранной стратегии перевода. Работа доказывает, что при игнорировании культурных различий качество перевода существенно снижается. The study aims to identify the relevant markers of American culture, to analyze their role in creating humor in the text and to outline the challenges for translating culturally specific humor into Russian. One episode of The Big Bang Theory has been analyzed. In this paper, we propose an analytical model that is applicable to the description of the meaning of a transcript of a TV episode. In the final stage of the analysis it will be used to evaluate the quality of the Russian translation. The 209 utterances of the original transcript have been divided into 39 Comic Episodes within the four Themes: Religion, Racial Equality, Family and Friends, Academic Intellectualism. During the final stage of the analysis, each of the Comic Episodes will be compared to its Russian translation in order to establish the degree to which culturally specific humor has been successfully conveyed in the Russian text. The study demonstrates that the textual coherence of an episode is created by the integrated structure of the three tiers of meaning defined in the paper as Themes, Ideals and Comic Episodes. This analytical model has been used to identify that the humor of the Religion Theme is based on the introduction of the Theme markers into contexts incompatible with the Theme imperative; or by introducing markers that contradict the Ideal being promoted. The key to the humor in the Family and Friends Theme lies in the characters' discrepancies in the interpretation of the markers corresponding to the Ideal and contradicting it. In the Racial equality Theme, the humor is formed by the contrast of markers that are unacceptable from the thematic imperative point of view and of markers that are acceptable within the framework of the Theme and the acceptable Ideal. The humor within the Academic Intellectualism Theme has been created by the combination of contradictory markers in the replicas of one character - markers of the acceptable Ideal and markers that contradict the imperative of the Theme. When translating into Russian, it is most often formally possible to preserve the humorous technique of the original, however, it is not possible to preserve the original Ideals due to the absence of some culture-specific element in the target language. The paper demonstrates that cultural differences significantly affect the quality of the translation.
