The discourse of suicide in the context of modern biopolitics: a study of the TV series "13 Reasons Why"

Abstract

Объект: самоубийство как социокультурный феномен. Предмет: дискурс самоубийства в контексте биополитики. Цель работы – изучить, как современная биополитика влияет на дискурс самоубийства, на способы репрезентации этой социальной проблемы, оценить каким образом и в какой степени осуществляется это влияние. По итогам исследования были сделаны выводы об отношении к самоубийству в обществе, о выгоде биополитической власти в сокращении уровня самоубийств, о сформировавшихся дискурсах самоубийства в СМИ и в сериале «13 причин почему» и о влиянии биополитики на каждый из дискурсов. Практическая значимость исследования определяется актуальностью проблемы самоубийств в современном мире и важностью изучения проблематики с позиций дискурса и отношения общества к данному феномену.

Object: suicide as a sociocultural phenomenon. Subject: discourse of suicide in the context of biopolitics. The aim of the work is to study how current biopolitics influences the discourse of suicide, the ways of representing this social problem, to assess how and to what extent this influence is exercised. Based on the results of the research, there were drawn conclusions about attitudes towards suicide in society, about the benefits of biopolitical power in reducing the suicide rate, about the emerging discourses of suicide in the media and in the series "13 Reasons Why" and about the influence of biopolitics on each of the discourses. The practical significance of the study is determined by the relevance of the problem of suicide nowadays and the importance of studying the problem from the standpoint of discourse and society's attitude to this phenomenon.
