The role of noise in the construction of private space in urban contexts: a case study of the Vyborg district in St Petersburg

Abstract

Данная работа посвящена анализу конструирования границы приватных пространств в городе при помощи шумов. Она содержит обзор ключевых теорий урбанистики и sound studies, авторское определение шума, новое обоснование изучения шумов в социальных науках при помощи синтеза акторно-сетевой теории Б. Латура и теории фреймов И. Гофмана. В процессе реализации исследования была произведена апробация авторского антропологического метода звуковой интервью-прогулки, а также были сформулированы основные позиции для типологии шумов в городской среде в зависимости от их функций. Данная работа претендует на статус мультидисциплинарного знания, поскольку выявленные в процессе изучения шумов особенности их функционирования будут полезны не только урбанистам, но и социологам, антропологам и всем, кто занимается изучением приватных пространств в городе.

This work is devoted to the analysis of the role of noises in the construction of private space’s boundaries in the city. It contains an overview of the key theories of urban studies and sound studies, the author's definition of noise, a new justification of the study of noise in the social sciences using the synthesis of B. Latour's actor-network theory and E. Goffman's theory of frames. In the course of the research, the author's anthropological method of sound walking interviews was tested, and the main positions were formulated for the typology of noises in the urban environment, depending on their functions. This work claims the status of multidisciplinary knowledge since the features of their functioning revealed in the process of studying noise will be useful not only for urbanists but also for sociologists, anthropologists and everyone who is studying private spaces in the city.
