The discourse of the geography and history of Old Rus' in the Russian chronographs of the 16th - 17th centuries and in the Eastern European historical narrative: A comparative analysis

Abstract

«Древняя Русь» - это сложный интеллектуальный концепт, используемый в современной историографии для обозначения ранней истории восточнославянского региона. Настоящая магистерская ВКР посвящена выявлению образа «Древней Руси» в русских и восточноевропейских источниках XVI-XVII веков. Главной задачей для нас являлся поиск ответа на вопрос – чем Древняя Русь являлась для московских и польско-литовских книжников в указанный период, когда военные столкновения вокруг древнерусского наследства вспыхивали особенно интенсивно. В работе изучаются русские хронографы и восточноевропейские исторические нарративы. Данные источники выбраны по причине того, что в них выстраивались не локальные, но региональные картины истории. Создавая подобные масштабные модели, интеллектуалы были вынуждены систематизировать свои представления об истории и географии. На страницах выбранных нами источников Древняя Русь вписывалась в региональный контекст, что позволяет нам точно определить роль древнерусского наследства для того или иного государственного образования в исторических нарративах.

"Ancient Rus'" - is a complex intellectual concept, used in modern historiography to describe the early history of East Slavic region. This magister’s thesis is devoted to identifying the image of "Ancient Rus'" in the Russian and East-European sources of XVI-XVII centuries. The main task for us is to find an answer for the complicated question - what was the "Ancient Rus'" for Moscow and the Polish-Lithuanian authors during the mentioned period, when the wars around the «Old Russian» heritage were fought especially often. In our thesis we investigate Russian’s chronographs and East European historical narratives. These sources were chosen, because they built not local, but regional picture of history. During the creation of such large-scale models, the intellectuals were forced to organize in system their understanding of history and geography. On the pages of these sources, "Ancient Rus'" was placed into the regional context. That allows us to accurately determine the role of ancient Russian heritage for the particular states in the historical narratives.
