The perception of the 1917 events by Petrograd intelligentsia: Evidence from diaries and memoirs

Abstract

В данной работе рассматривается история революции 1917 года глазами представителей петроградской интеллигенции. Интеллигенты, как представители высокообразованной части общества, внимательно следили за происходившими событиями в городе и оставили яркие и детальные свидетельства прошлого. Хронологические рамки данного исследования охватывают 1917 год, т.к. именно в этом году произошли коренные перемены в жизни всей страны. В работе последовательно рассматриваются политические события, разворачивавшиеся в столице от февраля до октября 1917 года. Естественно, описывая политические катаклизмы невозможно не сказать о предпосылках и о последствиях происходившего, поэтому исследование не останавливается на октябре 1917 года, а продолжается до декабря 1917 года включительно. Географические рамки исследования охватывают Петроград и ближайшие его окрестности. В основе работы лежит изучение личных документов, таких как дневники и мемуары. Часть использованных источников были впоследствии отредактированы и переписаны, поэтому первая глава исследования посвящена археографическому анализу подобных источников. Вторая глава посвящена политическим событиям 1917 года. Здесь последовательно рассмотрены события февральской революции, периода кризисов Временного правительства и октябрьский переворот, что обусловило выделение соответствующих параграфов. В третьей главе жизнь столицы в 1917 году рассматривается с другого ракурса. В центре внимания исследователя теперь становятся не политические вопросы, такие как отношение представителей интеллигенции к лидерам новой власти, описание в их мемуарных свидетельствах событий на фронте, а также характеристика экономического положения в столице в революционный 1917 год. Источниковой базой исследования послужили дневники и мемуары представителей интеллигенции, как опубликованные, так и отложившиеся в архиве, архивные материалы по истории экономики Петрограда и периодическая печать. В приложениях к основному тексту приводится классификация использованных источников мемуарного характера, а также сравнительные таблицы мемуарных документов З.Н. Гиппиус, О.В. Синакевич и Б.А. Энгельгардта.

As the title implies the article deals with the Revolution of 1917 through the eyes of the representatives of the Petrograd intelligentsia. As representatives of a highly educated social unit, intelligentsia kept a close eye on the situation in the city and left vivid and detailed sentence of the past. It is examined the entire 1917, since it was the year when the drastic change took place in the country. The paper gives detailed information on the political events in the capital from February to October 1917. Much attention is given to the preconditions and consequences of the political calamity, thus the text covers both October and December1917. The geographical target of the research is Petrograd and its surroundings. The research is based on the text of personal documents, such as diaries and memoires. Some of the sources used were later edited and rewritten, therefore the first chapter concerns the archeographic analysis of such sources. The second chapter described the events of 1917. It is dealt with the events of the February Revolution , the period of crisis in the Provisional Government and the October Revolution in separate paragraphs. In the third chapter the situation in the capital is examined with a different perspective. Besides the political issues, such as the attitude of the intelligentsia to the leaders of the new governments, description of the events at the front, the paper draws our attention to the economic situation in the country during the Revolution of 1917. The source base of the research were diaries and memoires of intelligentsia representatives, including both the published ones and those that are accessible in the archive only, also the archive material on the history of Economics of Petrograd and the periodical press. In the Appendix to the main text it is presented a classification of the used memoires and also there are given the comparative tables of the memoires of Gippius, Sinakevitch and Engelgardt.
