Communicating connotative characteristics of significant work situations using idiomatic expressions

Abstract

There are still no well-developed taxonomies of contextual and situational characteristics. We assume that important contextual characteristics are reflected in idiomatic expressions. The aim of the research is to find out how well situations translated only with idioms are similarly understood by different people. To achieve this aim, the semantic differential method is used. Results show that different people similarly understand situations described only by the means of idioms; hence idioms can be effective for the explication of contextual characteristics. Refs 13.
