Ethnic Self-identification of Amazigh in Morocco and Algeria: Culturological Analysis

Abstract

Настоящая работа посвящена изучению феномена этнической самоидентификации амазиг Марокко и Алжира, ставшего особенно актуальным ввиду заметного подъема этнического сознания этого народа со второй половины XX в. По причине длительного воздействия арабо-мусульманской и французской культур, а также сложившейся ситуации языкового доминирования диалектов арабского языка и ряда других причин, значительная часть автохтонного населения соотносит себя с иной этнической группой и идентифицирует себя в качестве арабов. На основе проанализированных данных, проведенного социологического опроса и беседы с представителями культуры амазиг Марокко и Алжира дается характеристика формирования этнического самосознания и особенностей проявления этнической самоидентификации амазиг в исторической перспективе. В результате исследования определены факторы, оказывающие влияние на построение персональной идентификации, уровень и формы ее выражения, а также основные препятствия на пути к положительной самоидентификации автохтонного населения.

This work is dedicated to the research of Amazigh’s ethnic self-identification in Morocco and Algeria that has become relevant due to a great renaissance of ethnic consciousness of representatives of this culture in the second half of the 20th century. Due to the long-term influence of the Arab-Muslim and French cultures, as well as the prevalence of the Arabic language dialects and a number of other reasons, a significant part of the indigenous population correlates oneself with another ethnic group and identifies oneself as Arabs. On the basis of analyzed data, a conducted sociological survey and conversations with representatives of the Amazigh culture in Morocco and Algeria the characteristics of building ethnic self-awareness and the features of representation of the Amazigh’s ethnic self-identification in historical perspective are given. As a result of the research the factors influencing the construction of personal identification, level and forms of its expression and also the main obstacles to the positive self-identification of the autochthonous people were determined.
