Sudan and the Red Sea area in the 16th – 19th centuries

Abstract

Тема данного исследования в отечественной научной литературе не получила должного освещения, что обуславливает его актуальность в наше время, тем более отношения России и Судана на данном этапе находятся на подъеме. В магистерской диссертации автор сконцентрировал внимание на связях Судана, существовавших в период XVI-XIX вв. в Красноморском бассейне. Цель данной работы исследовать процессы политической, экономической, культурной истории красноморского побережья Судана. Диссертация состоит из введения, трех глав, заключения, списка использованной литературы и приложения. Первая глава исследования дает краткий обзор морских торговых и культурных связей в Красном море в период от египетских экспедиций времен фараонов до падения мамлюкского султаната в начале XVI века. Во второй главе рассказывается история развития региона в составе Османской империи: изменение его роли от потенциального пункта нового завоевания до превращения в периферийный санджак. Третья глава посвящена периоду, когда роль Красноморского бассейна резко возросла и ведущие европейские державы стали проявлять к нему большой интерес, а затем и основали здесь свои колонии. В заключении подводятся итоги работы, приводятся выводы проведенного исследования. Приложение к диссертации включает переводы некоторых фрагментов десятой части книги «Сейахатнаме» известного османского путешественника Эвлии Челеби. При подготовке работы была использована обширная литература на русском, английском, арабском и немецком языках.

The subject of this research has not received in domestic scientific literature adequate coverage, that causes its relevance in our time, the more the relations of Russia and Sudan are on the rise now. In my master's thesis I concentrated on the links of Sudan in the Red Sea area that existed in the period of the XVI-XIX centuries. The purpose of this work is to investigate the processes of political, economic, cultural history of the Red Sea coast of Sudan. The thesis consists of an introduction, three chapters, a conclusion, a list of references and an appendix. The first chapter of the study gives a brief overview of the sea trade and cultural ties in the Red Sea in the period from the Egyptian expeditions of the Pharaohs to the fall of the Mamluk sultanate in the early 16th century. The second chapter tells the story of the development of the region in the Ottoman Empire: that is a transformation of its role from the potential point of a new conquest to a peripheral Sanjak. The third chapter is devoted to the period when the role of the Red Sea area sharply increased and the leading European powers began to show great interest to it and founded then their colonies there. In conclusion, the results of the work are summed up, the conclusions of the conducted research are given. The appendix includes translations of some fragments of the tenth part of the book “Seyahatname” written by the famous Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi. During the research extensive literature in Russian, English, Arabic and German was used.
