The "Oryun Haengsil-to" body of parables in the manuscript collection of the Asian and African Department, the Research Library of St Petersburg State University

Abstract

«Орюн хэнсиль-до» («Иллюстрации практики исполнения Пяти норм морали») – это корейский письменный памятник, который был опубликован в 1797 году, во время правления династии Чосон. «Орюн хэнсиль-до» основан на конфуцианских правилах, которые регулируют отношения между людьми - «Трех заповедях и Пяти нормах морали» (самган орюн). «Три заповеди и Пять норм морали» описывают то, какими должны быть отношения правителя и подданного, мужа и жены, отца и сына, братьев и друзей. «Орюн хэнсиль-до» состоит из 150 притч, которые посвящены людям образцового поведения. Каждая притча сопровождается иллюстрацией знаменитого корейского художника Ким Хондо. Сборник «Орюн хэнсиль-до» был создан с целью пропаганды конфуцианских морально-этических норм. Два экземпляра этого памятника хранятся в фонде Восточного отдела библиотеки Санкт-Петербургского государственного университета. Целью этой работы было собрать и проанализировать максимальное количество информации об этом сборнике и привести его описание. В работе рассматривается понятие «Трех заповедей и Пяти норм морали» в конфуцианской философии, история создания «Орюн хэнсиль-до». Также в работе представлен перевод 38 притч из сборника и их анализ, информация об экземплярах, которые хранятся на территории Республики Корея. Работа состоит из введения, пяти глав, заключения, списка использованной литературы и приложения.

«Oryun Haengsil-to» (An Illustrated Guide to the Five Moral Imperatives) was published in 1797 (the 21st year of King Jeongjo’s reign) during the Joseon Period. «Oryun Haengsil-to» is based on Confucian ethical standards and moral values commonly known as the “Three Bonds and Five Relationships” (Samgang Oryun). The Three Bonds represented the bonds between 1) the ruler and subject, 2) father and son, 3) husband and wife, while the Five Relationships stressed the importance of human relationship between 1) the ruler and subject, 2) father and son, 3) elder brother and younger brother, 4) husband and wife, 5) friends. «Oryun Haengsil-to» contains the acts of 150 people who set a good example in the five basic behaviors to be observed towards one’s parents, as well as towards the king, one’s husband, adults, and friends, along with woodblock prints made in Kim Hong-do’s customary painting style. It was intended to help ordinary people more easily understand the basic ethical virtues taught by Confucianism. Two copies of «Oryun Haengsil-ro» are stored in the manuscript collection of the Asian and African department, the academic library of St Petersburg State University. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to collect and analyze the maximum amount of information about this body of parables and give its description. It introduces the concept of “Three Bonds and Five Relationships” in Confucian philosophy, the history of «Oryun Haengsil-to», the translation of 38 parables and its analysis, and also the information about copies which are stored in a Republic of Korea. This thesis consists of an introduction, five chapters, a conclusion, a list of references and an appendix.
