Термин сплайн был введен в статье Айзека Шёнберга в 1946 г. Особенно интенсивное развитие теории сплайнов происходило в 50-70 годы двадцатого века, традиционной прикладной сферой использования интерполяционных сплайнов стали системы автоматизированного проектирования. Однако потенциальные возможности сплайнов значительно шире, чем просто построение некоторых кривых.
