Specific features of subtitling as a type of film translation: A case study of the translation of the German film "The Lives of Others" into Russian

Abstract

Киноперевод – комплексная адаптация аудиовизуального материала, которая включает работу не только над письменным текстом, но и над аудиовизуальным рядом. В эпоху развития различных онлайн-киноплощадок, потребность в кинопереводе, в частности, в дубляже и особенно субтитрировании, сильно возросла. Актуальность данного исследования обусловлена тем, что основным вербальным компонентом любой кинокартины является кинодиалог, при работе над которым переводчик сталкивается с самой гибкой формой существования языка – разговорной речью. В современном мире она постоянно пополняется новой лексикой и меняется с грамматической точки зрения намного быстрее, чем раньше, что требует особого лингвистического подхода к анализу появившихся новых явлений. Данные моменты необходимо учитывать также и в процессе разных видов киноперевода. Кроме этого на финальном этапе работы переводчик должен также «подогнать» текст под технические требования, для чего приходится использовать различные переводческие методы и трансформации. Целью данной работы является анализ текста русских субтитров и кинотекста дубляжа к немецкому фильму «Das Leben der anderen» (рус. «Жизнь других») на предмет выявления методов и трансформаций, используемых при переводе основных аспектов разговорной речи. В качестве основных задач исследования выделяются следующие: сопоставление монтажных листов оригинала с текстом субтитров и дубляжа на русском языке; выделение основных направлений анализа; характеристика и классификация корпуса примеров; выявление основных стратегий и методов перевода, используемых в процессе двух видов киноперевода – субтитрирования и дубляжа. Это позволяет сравнить и оценить качество обоих анализируемых видов киноперевода.Film translation is a complex adaptation of audiovisual material, which demands working not only on the written text, but also on the audio- and visual component. Due to the development of various video streaming platforms, the need for film translation, in particular dubbing and especially subtitling, has significantly increased. The relevance of this study stems from the fact that the main verbal component of any motion picture is a cinematic dialogue, working on which translators are usually faced with the most flexible form of language existence - colloquial speech. Nowadays, it is constantly updated with new vocabulary and even grammar, much faster than before, which requires a special linguistic approach to the analysis of new phenomena that have appeared, this must also be taken into account during the film translation. In addition, at the final stage of the work, the translator must also "adjust" the text to the technical requirements, for which it is necessary to use various translation methods and transformations. The purpose of this work is to analyze the text of Russian subtitles and film dubbing for the German film "Das Leben der anderen" ("The Lives of Others") in order to identify the methods and transformations used in translating the main aspects of spoken language. The main tasks of the research are the following: comparison of the original montage sheets with the text of Russian subtitles and dubbing; highlighting the main directions of analysis; characteristics and classification of examples; identification of the main strategies and methods of translation used in two types of film translation - subtitling and dubbing. This makes it possible to compare and evaluate the quality of both analyzed types of film translation.
