Genre specificity of Stephen King's novel "The Shining"

Abstract

В работе исследуются традиционные элементы литературы ужасов, которые применяются в романе Стивена Эдвина Кинга «Сияние»: как устойчивые приемы, исторически сложившиеся в жанре, так и свойственные этому жанру темы. Целью исследования стало отследить в «Сиянии» влияние предшествующей литературной традиции, начиная с готического романа и заканчивая такими поздними образцами литературы ужасов, как произведения Роберта Блоха и Ширли Джексон, чтобы таким образом определить место романа в современном развитии жанра. Помимо выявления в романе элементов, характерных для литературы ужасов, анализ позволил изучить особенности применения этих элементов, их роль и функции в тексте. Помимо этого, в работе исследуется тематика романа, в которой устойчивые темы, свойственные литературе ужасов, пересекаются с современными и актуальными вопросами, которые писатель поднимает в своем творчестве в целом и в романе «Сияние» в частности.

This paper analyzes the traditional elements of horror fiction as applied in “The Shining”, a novel by Stephen Edwin King; these are both the set techniques that have developed within the genre historically and the subjects typical to it. The goal of this research was to trace the influence on “The Shining” of the preceding literary tradition, from early gothic novels to more recent examples of horror fiction, i.e., Robert Bloch’s and Shirley Jackson’s works; this serves to define the place of the novel in the current development of the genre. In addition to analyzing the traits inherent to horror fiction, the goal of this research was to discover the specificity of appliance of these traits, as well as their purposes and functions within the novel. Then, the paper touches upon the topics developed in the novel and states that the traditional horror fiction subjects are combined therein with certain contemporary concerns that are raised in Stephen King’s writings and in “The Shining” in particular.
