Abstract

The article is devoted to the description of some aspects of Max Frei’s poetics. Both the features of mass and non-mass literature are clearly expressed in the author’s work. In Frei’s prose we see the interaction of different levels of the text. An analysis of the system of motives of the cycle “Labyrinths of Echo” demonstrates a close connection between the style of characters’ speech and the plots of books. According to Frei’s artistic creation concept, already described by the researchers, verbal and objective reality are equal in rights. As shown in the article, this concept receives an artistic justification due to the fact that any idiom, joke, occasional play on words can materialize in the of the depicted world. Two themes are particularly important in the structure of Max Frei’s artistic world. Firstly, we are talking about remarks that express doubts about the human nature of the main character. Secondly, we are talking about remarks in which the equality of books and life is postulated. These themes prepare the final plot twists of the “Labyrinths of Echo”, due to which the postmodernist blurring of the boundaries between textual and non-textual reality takes place.
