Abstract
The research topic is the mythologization of Xuanzang's journey, a popular story in Chinese culture. The first chapter discusses the features of works created in different eras and dedicated to pilgrimage, the author of each of which interprets a well-known historical fact in his own way. In the second chapter, with the help of a comparative analysis, the process of Xuanzang's deheroization is highlighted: he loses the status of the main character, turning into a passive character, which is facilitated by the emergence of a new fantastic hero - the Monkey King. The process of transferring the attention of readers to fictional characters, which become the engines of the plot, is considered. The third chapter analyzes borrowings from mythology, folklore, Buddhist literature, with which the authors enrich the plot, and several popular narratives are translated. The ways of development of fantastic plots and the purpose of their introduction are considered. The conclusions obtained during the study are presented in the final part of research.
