Speech act of disagreement in modern English fiction and journalism

Abstract

Цель данной выпускной работы - выявить и систематизировать особенности выражения несогласия в англоязычной речи в разных стилях. Первая глава посвящены теории речевого акта, особенностей прямых и косвенных речевых актов, особенностей речевого акта несогласия и различия художественного стиля от публицистического. Вторая глава посвящена сравнительно-сопоставительному анализу примеров выражения несогласия в англоязычных художественных произведениях: Lewis C. «Alice's Adventures in Wonderland», George Orwell «1984» и Sue Monk Kidd «The Secret Life of Bees» и в публицистике: «The Thibodaux Daily Comet», «The Economist» и «The New York Times», «Electronic Products», «Harvard Business Review», «Women’s Health». Как показал анализ, в художественном стиле в большинстве случаев используются косвенные средства выражения несогласия. При их использовании определить несогласие можно только в контексте. Для публицистического стиля также характерно косвенное выражение несогласия, однако в большинстве случаев несогласие выражается прямыми средствами и имеет эмоциональную окраску. Отличием публицистического стиля является употребление фраз-клише для выражения неуверенности и несогласия.The purpose of this graduate work is to identify and systematize the features of the expression of disagreement in English speech in different styles. The first chapter studies theories of speech act, speech act of disagreement, peculiarities of direct and indirect speech acts and features of fiction style and journalism style. The second chapter analyses examples of the expression of disagreement in modern English fiction: «Alice's Adventures in Wonderland» by C. Lewis, «1984» by G. Orwell, «The Secret Life of Bees» by S. M. Kidd and articles from «The Thibodaux Daily Comet», «The Economist», «The New York Times», «Electronic Products», «Harvard Business Review», «Women’s Health». The analysis shows that in the style of fiction, in most cases indirect means of expressing disagreement are used. What is more, a disagreement can only be defined in context. Indirect disagreement is also common in journalism, but in most cases disagreement is expressed by direct means and has an emotional dimension. The distinction of journalism is the use of cliché phrases to express uncertainty and disagreement.
