Analysis of varieties-populations of garden radish (Raphanus Sativus L) by means of inbreeding

Abstract

The aim of this work was the study of the intravarietal structure of the garden radish which is a cross-pollinated plant. Heterozygosity of the individuals constituting the varieties-populations was demonstrated by means of inbreeding, the strains have been isolated from I₁ and I₆ widely differing in their morphological and physiological characters and in their fertility. On the basis of the results of inbreeding and of the interstrain crosses, a conclusion was drawn that a varietal population is a system of coadapted heterozygous genotypes. The optimal level of heterozygosity of the individuals in a population secures the heterotic type of development of the variety at a high level of homeostasis. It is this heterotic type of development of the individuals which provides the stable and high yield of the variety-population.
