Theoderic the Great: The images of power

Abstract

Выпускная квалификационная работа, выполненная на кафедре истории Средних веков, посвящена изучению комплекса репрезентации власти Теодориха Великого как единого феномена. С одной стороны, это анализ образов его власти в конкретных источниках, с другой – это выявление методов конструирования образа власти. Источниковую базу исследования составляют основные тексты по истории Остготской Италии, в частности – Variae Кассиодора Сенатора, Pars Posterior Анонима Валезия, «Война с готами» Прокопия Кесарийского и «Панегирик королю Теодориху» Магна Феликса Эннодия. Основную часть работы составляют две главы, первая из которых посвящена готскому компоненту репрезентации власти Теодориха, вторая – греко-римскому. Главным выводом работы служит тезис о построении образа власти Теодориха Великого через утверждение её патриархальной природы и подражание императорской власти.

This graduation thesis on the history of Middle Ages for the bachelor’s degree is concerned with the ways of representation of Theoderic the Great’s political power as an integral entity. The paper presents an analysis of the images of his power appearing in particular historical sources as well as makes an attempt at revealing the methods applied in the course of their construction. The source basis underlying the research is comprised of a number of texts dealing with the history of Ostrogothic Italy, namely Cassiodorus Senator’s Variae, the Anonymus Valesianus’ Pars Posterior, The Gothic War by Procopius of Caesarea and The Panegyric of Theoderic by Magnus Felix Ennodius. The main part of the paper contains two chapters, the first one concerning the “Gothic” aspect of the representation of Theoderic’s power and the second one attending to the “Graeco-Roman” aspect. The primary conclusion is the thesis that Theoderic’s the Great image of power was constructed by strengthening of its patriarchal nature and imitation the imperial power.
