Benjamin Franklin and establishment of the American society as reflected by the Russian contemporaries

Abstract

Диссертация посвящена личности прославленного американского ученого, просветителя и государственного деятеля Бенджамина Франклина. В этой работе тщательно и детально проанализированы сведения об этой знаменитой личности, опубликованные в столичной российской газете «Санктпетербургские ведомости» в 1728-1776 гг. Основываясь на многочисленных газетных публикациях, материалах из «Автобиографии» Франклина и других документах, автор диссертации рассказывает о его общественно-политической, научной и просветительской деятельности. А также автор изучает трактовку ряда известных советских и российских исследователей, по которой Франклин рассматривается как символ Просвещения и передовой науки в Северной Америке и в основных европейских странах (включая Российскую империю) во второй половине XVIII в. И, наконец, значительная часть материалов представлена впервые в научных исследованиях такого плана.

The thesis is devoted to the personality and activities of the celebrated American scientist, enlightener and statesman Benjamin Franklin. The thesis provides a careful and detailed analysis of the information about this famous person as it was published by the capital Russian newspaper “Saint-Petersburg Records” in 1728-1776 years. According to the numerous newspaper publications, the materials from Franklin's “Autobiography” and other documents the author of this paper tells about Franklin's the social, political, scientific and educational activities. And also the author examines the attitude of several well-known soviet and contemporary Russian researchers to B. Franklin as a symbol of the Enlightenment and progressive science in North American and in the main European countries (including the Russian Empire) in the second half of the XVIIIth century. And finally, the considerable part of the materials has been introduced in the researches of this kind for the first time.
