Implications of the military-political developments in the Indo-Pacific for the security system in North-East Аsia

Abstract

Military and political developments in the Indo-Asia-Pacific in the course of the last decade for the first time became one of the prominent factors, shaping security environment in North-East Asia. The rise of the Indo-Pacific as the world’s largest economic and transportation hub and critical dependence of all major East Asian economies on its vulnerable maritime supply lines were conducive to its transformation into principal arena for Sino-American competition and implementation of rival projects for a new Asian security architecture. Analysis of US and Chinese international militarypolitical engagement data for this region reveals consistent containment patterns remarkably similar to those found on Russia’s periphery and also highlight a new phase of intense competition starting in 2010s.
