The Concept of the Vessel in Contemporary Art Practices. Classification and Interpretation Experience

Abstract

Сосуд – обиходный горшок, вместилище субстанций, универсальная организующая форма. С развитием нематериальной культуры концепт сосуда обрастал метафорами, подвергался мифологизации и сакрализации, превращался в инструмент философского дискурса. Актуальность настоящей работы обеспечивается новизной выбора предмета исследования и оригинальностью предлагаемой классификации. С опорой на важнейшие философские тексты 20 века в работе исследуются вопросы репрезентации и концептуализации сосуда в разных видах искусства 1960-2020х годов. Целью становится разработка релевантного способа типологизации ситуаций использования этого концепта в современных арт-практиках. В первой главе рассматриваются интерпретации образа в феминистском дискурсе, где сосуд оказывается метафорически соотнесён с женским телесным образом. От «Логов» Луиз Буржуа до горшков и сеток периферийных монодисциплинарных художниц проблема целостности и вмещаемости обсуждается через апроприацию сосуда. Во второй главе исследуется опыт использования концепта в интересах постколониального искусства: в творчестве Тистера Гейтса и Симоны Ли «горшок» приобретает значение символа «чёрной идентичности» и ручного анонимного труда. В третьей главе рассматриваются ситуации дальневосточных арт-практик – на территориях, где травма утраты культурной памяти побуждает к экспериментам с образом исторического сосуда. Тревога, связанная с потерей целостности или вмещающей способности, находит выражение в творчестве Ай Вэй Вэя, Ий Су Кён и других авторов, использующих керамический сосуд как культурный код. Связь с традицией, мифологией и бессознательным становится тем общим местом, которое объединяет описанные ситуации, связанные с использованием концепта сосуда в современных арт-практиках.

A vessel is an everyday pot, a container of substances, a universal organizing form. With the development of non-material culture, the concept of a vessel has gathered many metaphors, has been converted to mythologization and sacralized, and turning into an instrument of philosophical discourse. The relevance of this work is ensured with the new approach of chosing the subject of the research and the freshness of the proposed classification. Based on the most important philosophical texts of the 20th century, the thesis explores the issues of representation and conceptualization of the vessel in various art forms of the 1960s-2020s. The main goal is the development of a relevant way of typologizing the situations in which this concept is used in contemporary art practices. The first chapter deals with the interpretation of the image in feminist discourse, where the vessel is metaphorically correlated with the female body. From the "Lairs" of Louise Bourgeois to the pots and nets of peripheral monodisciplinary artists, the problem of wholeness and containment is discussed through the appropriation of the vessel. The second chapter examines the experience of using the pot-concept in the interests of post-colonial art: in the works of Theaster Gates and Simone Leigh, the "pot" aquires the meaning of a symbol of "black identity" and manual anonymous labor. The third chapter deals with the situations of the Far Eastern art practices - in the territories where the trauma of the loss of cultural memory encourages the experimentation with the image of a historical vessel. Anxiety associated with the loss of integrity or containing capacity finds its expression in the works of Ai Wei Wei, Yeesookyung and other authors who use the ceramic vessel as a cultural code. The connection with tradition, mythology and the unconscious mind becomes the common point that unites the overmentioned situations which are related to the use of the concept of a vessel in contemporary art practices.
