Regional Musical Theater in Modern Russia as a Cultural Institution: Strategies for Functioning and Development

Abstract

Предметом исследования стали стратегии функционирования и развития региональных музыкальных театров, и, в первую очередь, театров оперы и балета, в России в XXI веке (вплоть до сезона 2022/2023 гг.). Основная гипотеза работы заключается в мысли, что региональные институции в России именно в XXI стали формировать тон современного музыкально-театрального процесса в России, конкурируя в этом со столичными театрами. В работе анализируются вопросы репертуарной политики, художественного и административного руководства, стратегии взаимодействия институции с региональными властями, яркие творческие достижения, которые были отмечены премией «Золотая маска». Наиболее подробно эти кейсы исследуются на примере пяти оперных театров, находящихся в Нижнем Новгороде, Перми, Екатеринбурге, Новосибирске и Ростове-на-Дону (в последнем случае, это музыкальный театр). В завершении работы дается сравнительная таблица деятельности театров в сезоне 2022/2023 годов.

The study focuses on the strategies of functioning and development of regional musical theaters, and, first of all, opera and ballet theaters, in Russia in the 21st century (up to the season 2022/2023). The main hypothesis of the paper is that regional institutions in Russia in the 21st century have begun to form the character of the modern process in music and theatre of Russia, competing with metropolitan theaters in this respect. This paper analyzes the issues of repertoire policy, artistic and administrative management, strategies of interaction between the institution and regional authorities, and notable creative achievements that have been recognized by the Golden Mask Award. These cases are examined in detail on the example of five opera houses in Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, and Rostov-on-Don (in the latter case it is a musical theater). The paper concludes with a comparative table of the activity of these theatres in the 2022/2023 season.
