Webtoons as a part of South Korean culture in the XXI century: A case study of several romantic stories

Abstract

Данная выпускная квалификационная работа посвящена одному из основных элементов, формирующих массовый культурный контент Республики Корея - веб-тунам (webtoon) – цифровым комиксам, появившимся в начале XXI века. Целью работы является выявление места веб-тунов в южнокорейской культуре, а также их культурной специфики. Актуальность исследования обусловлена тем, что в наши дни в Южной Корее к веб-тунам наблюдается повышенный интерес общества. В ходе исследования был собран, изучен и систематизирован материал об истории манхва как предшественника веб-тунов. Были рассмотрены этапы развития веб-тунов, причины популярности и основные характеристики. В качестве материала для исследования были выбраны и проанализированы три популярных южнокорейских веб-туна. Посредством анализа была выявлена специфика подачи материала и связь с культурой. Благодаря анализу удалось выявить взаимосвязь веб-тунов с традиционной литературой и ролью текста в корейской культуре и традиционным распределением ролей.

This final qualifying work is devoted to one of the main elements forming the mass cultural content of the Republic of Korea - webtoons - digital comics that appeared at the beginning of the XXI century. The aim of the work is to identify the place of webtoons in South Korean culture, as well as their cultural specifics. The relevance of the study is due to the fact that nowadays in South Korea there is an increased public interest in webtoons (digital comics). In the course of the study, material was collected, studied and systematized about the history of manhwa as a precursor of webtoons. The stages of development of webtoons, the reasons for popularity and the main characteristics were considered. Three popular South Korean webtoons were selected and analyzed as the material for the study. Through the analysis, the specifics of the presentation of the material and the connection with culture were revealed. Through the analysis, it was possible to identify the relationship of webtoons with traditional literature and the role of text in Korean culture and the traditional distribution of roles.
