The Kwan Um School of Buddhism: History, Philosophy, Practice

Abstract

Данная выпускная квалификационная работа посвящена комплексному исследованию школы Кван Ум, одной из современных буддийских школ, имеющей свои центры по всему миру. Основанная корейским монахом Сун Саном в Соединённых Штатах Америки, Кван Ум объединяет в себе разного рода практики, популярные как в Корее, так и в других восточноазиатских странах. Ключевая роль в формировании учения школы и разработке практической составляющей принадлежит её основателю. Творческий подход Сун Сана к созданию собственного варианта буддийского учения и практики стал значимым фактором привлечения внимания американской аудитории, а его тяга к прозелитизму обеспечила распространение школы по всему миру. Стремясь завоевать популярность среди населения западных стран, Сун Сан не боялся экспериментировать и отходить от корейской религиозной традиции, приспосабливая практики школы к потребностям своей целевой аудитории.

Выпускная квалификационная работа состоит из введения, трёх глав, заключения и списка использованной литературы, включающего источники и исследования по выбранной теме. Общий объём работы составляет 81 страницу.

This thesis is dedicated to the complex research of the Kwan Um School of Zen, one of the modern Buddhist schools having its centers all around the world. Having been founded by Korean monk Seung Sahn the Kwan Um School of Zen combines different kinds of practices which are popular in Korea as well as in other East Asian countries. A key role in forming the school’s teaching and development of practice belongs to the school’s founder. Seung Sahn’s creative approach to making its own variant of Buddhist teaching and practice became an important factor of attracting American audience’s attention and his craving for proselytizing provided school’s spreading all over the world. Seeking to obtain the popularity among the western countries’ people Seung Sahn did not fear to experiment and move away from Korean religious tradition adapting the school’s practices to the needs of his target audience.

The thesis consists of the introduction, the three chapters, the conclusion and the list of used literature including the sources and the studies of the chosen topic. The work’s total volume makes up 81 pages.
