Costume design project for a film based on the novel "The Shadow Thief" by Marc Levy

Abstract

Данный дипломный проект является серией эскизов к фильму по произведению Марка Леви "Похититель Теней".В эскизах разработаны костюмы персонажей. Для изображения были выбраны наиболее выразительные и яркие моменты романа, через которые показаны настроение и суть произведения.Работа выплнена на основе литературного текста, материалов по истории костюма, изобразительного и фото- материала того времени. Первая половина действия происходит в 70-х годах, вторая - в 80-х годах 20 века.Главный герой - мальчик.В произведении присутствует некоторая фантастичность,герой умеет общаться с тенями других людей. В следствие чего,в эскизах преобладает контрастное освещение и тени, как один из ключевых моментов романа.Костюмы 70х годов - яркие, так как это период детства главного героя. Костюмы 80х - более сдержаны и выполнены в холодных тонах.Образ главного героя в сравнении с другими персонажамии, как в детстве так и в юности, менее выразителен в плане костюма. Отдельно представлены эскизы некоторых персонажей произведения. В них акцент делается на детали и фактуру одежды, присутствует более точная проработка.Костюмы также подобраны в соответствии с образами. Эскизы выполнены на холстах в смешанной технике (акрил, масло, маслянная пастель). Данная художественно-изобразительная работа имеет практическую значимость и может быть в дальнейшем использована в кинопроизыводстве.

This thesis represents the series of sketches to the film by Mark Levi "The Shadow Thief". These sketches contain the design of characters' costumes. We have chosen the most expressive and significant parts of the novel, which show the mood and the core of the novel. The thesis is based on the novel "The Shadow Thief", materials concerning history of costume and materials on graphics and photography of that period. The first part of action takes place in 1970s - the second part - in 1980s of the 20 century. The main character is a boy. The genre of the novel is fiction - the main hero can communicate with shadows of other people. This fact explains the use of chiaroscuro in the sketches as one of the key points of the novel. 1970s costumes are bright, as this was the time of the main character's childhood. 1980s costumes are more restrained and are painted in cold colors. The image of the main character comparing to other ones is less expressive, when speaking about costumes, both in childhood and adolescence. The sketches of some other characters of the novel are presented separately. They have emphasis on details and texture of the clothes,they are more elaborate. Costumes are also picked in accordance with the images. Sketches are painted on canvases with acrylic, oil and oil pastels. This thesis has practical value and can be further used in filmmaking.
