Strategic priorities of NATO in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia

Abstract

Целью данной магистерской диссертации является определение целей деятельности НАТО в Эстонии, Латвии и Литве. С момента вступления в Альянс, Прибалтийские страны всегда занимали заметное место среди остальных союзников в силу их прошлого в составе Советского Союза, отставания в развитии по сравнению с другими странами-участницами и полной поддержки лидерства США в Евро-Атлантическом сообществе С годами отношение к этим странам, а также восприятие НАТО их места внутри организации претерпели изменения. Нынешнее положение дел заставило НАТО обратить пристальное внимание на военные потенциал Эстонии, Латвии и Литвы, а также на их способность противостоять вызовам их безопасности с восточной границы. Данная магистерская диссертация состоит из введения, трех глав, заключения и библиографии. В первой главе автор рассматривает развитие отношений между Организацией Североатлантического договора и тремя Балтийскими странами перед вторым раундом расширения Альянса с окончания Холодной войны. Вторая глава посвящена вниманию НАТО к Эстонии, Латвии и Литве как к странам-членам и взгляду Альянса на их проблемы безопасности. Третья глава определяет нынешнее восприятие НАТО угрозы для Эстонии, Латвии и Литвы и готовность Альянса защищать Балтийские страны.

The aim of this thesis is to define the purposes of NATO’s activity in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Since becoming members, the Baltic states always took a notable place within the Alliance due to their Soviet past, lagged development in comparison with other member states, and full support of the American leadership in the Euro-Atlantic community. Through the years, the attitude towards these states as well as NATO’s perception of them within the organization has been changing. The current state of affairs has forced NATO to pay close attention to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania’s military capabilities and ability to meet security challenges from the East. This master thesis consists of the introduction, three chapters, conclusion, and bibliography. In the first chapter, the author examines the development of relations between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the three Baltic states before the second round of the post-Cold War enlargement of the Alliance. The second chapter is devoted to NATO’s attention to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania as member states and the view of Alliance upon their security concerns. The third chapter determines the current perception of the threat to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania by NATO and its military readiness to defend the Baltic states in case of attack.
