Transformation of the doctrine of caritas in the writings of Protestant theologians in the middle of the 20th century

Abstract

Caritas, ключевое понятие триады fides, spes, caritas (1 Кор. 13:13), на протяжении веков являлось одним из основных для западного богословия; его прочтение менялось с течением времени, но вызовы первой половины XX века, поставившие под вопрос саму возможность любви, с очевидностью показали необходимость коренного переосмысления понятия – как в рамках католического, так и протестантского богословия. Разработанная в 30-х годах XX века и представленная в книге «Эрос и агапе» теория мотивов Андерса Нюгрена стала классической для протестантской теологии XX века. Критика, которой подвергалась теория, в основном акцентировала внимание на частных проблемах в теологическом построении Нюгрена и не предлагала полного пересмотра христианской концепции любви. Цель данного исследования заключается в изучении лютеранско-реформатского подхода к анализу новозаветных и раннехристианских текстов, а также в изучении влияния паулианской экзегетики на понимание древнегреческой и латинской терминологии.

For centuries, Caritas, the key concept of the triad ‘fides, spes, caritas’ (1 Cor 13:13), has been one of the most significant concepts of Western theology. Its meaning has changed over time, and the challenges of the first half of the XX century, which called into question the very possibility of love, clearly showed the insistent demand for rethink of this concept, both within the Catholic and Protestant theology. Motif research, which was developed by Anders Nygren in the 30s of XX century and presented in the book "Eros and Agape", became the most influential and authoritative theory for the Protestant theology of the XX century. While critics mainly focused on particular theological problems in Nygren's theory, and did not offer a complete revision to the Christian concept of love. The aim of this paper is to examine the Lutheran-Reformed approach to the analysis of the New Testament and Early Christian writings, as well as to explore the influence of exegesis of the Pauline Christianity on the understanding of ancient Greek and Latin terminology.
