Sir Robert Peel and parliamentary factions in England in 1846–1850 (statement of question)

Abstract

The article is devoted to power dynamics in English parliament during 1846–1850. The authors devote attention to an unexplored stage of Robert Peel’s political career. This article outlines the consequences of split in conservative ranks after repeal of Corn Laws and analyses of political prospects of 112 members of parliament, later called Peelites. The aim of article is to determine the nature of interaction between Robert Peel and Peelites during 1846–1850 and the degree of his influence upon results of the division. The authors concluded that Robert Peel was an obstacle for the further development of political party system, and his tragic death at the peak of popularity defined his political portrait in history for centuries to come.
