The social problems in the activities of the city defence committees in the Lower Volga region in 1941–1945

Abstract

This article discusses the procedure of the formation of urban defense committees of the Lower Volga region during the Great Patriotic War and their work in solving the social problems of the region, as well as the role of urban defense committees in the organization of supply of food and other items of daily demand and their work on the functioning of institutions of trade and public catering. The article presents orders and regulations to address the housing and utility problems in the region, the organization of health care, social assistance to people in need — military families, disabled soldiers, children, and evacuees. In addition, the specificity of social activities in urban areas of defense committees of the Lower Volga region is shown. Particular attention is paid to their decisions in the field of restoration of the social sphere of Stalingrad. Refs 29.
