Triumphal Theme in Ivan Korobov’s and Ivan Michurin’s Works. Interpretation of the Ancient Tradition in European Architecture of the 17th — First Half of the 18th Century

Abstract

The author of the article examines Ivan Korobov’s and Ivan Michurin’s architectural works made for the coronation events on the occasion of the Empress Elizaveta Petrovna’s enthronement. He analyses the design of the triumphal gate in Moscow, created by the architects in 1742, in the context of European architecture of 17th — first third of the 18th century. The author makes an attempt to link the features of these designs with the architecture of the similar European constructions and the architects’ personal experience in acquaintance with the architecture of Netherlands, especially Flemish Baroque, which became known to them during their training there in 1710s–1720s. Close attention is also paid to the urban context of the Triumphal arches in Russia and Europe. The key point of the article is that the architecture of the Moscow Triumphal gate may be considered as one of the important components in formation of Russian architecture of the 1730s–1760s, within the period prior to the prime of the Baroque style, especially of Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli’s version.

Статья посвящена работам архитекторов Ивана Коробова и Ивана Мичурина, выполненным ими к коронационным торжествам по случаю вступления на престол императрицы Елизаветы Петровны. Анализируются созданные архитекторами в 1742 г. известные проекты триумфальных ворот в Москве. Они рассматриваются в контексте европейской архитектуры XVII – первой трети XVIII в. Предпринята попытка связать особенности этих сооружений с архитектурой подобных построек, создававшихся в Европе, и с собственным опытом знакомства русских мастеров с архитектурой Нидерландов, прежде всего с фламандским барокко, в период их обучения здесь в 1710–1720-е гг. Внимание также обращено на градостроительный контекст, в котором возводились триумфальные ворота в Европе и России. Ключевым выводом является тезис о том, что архитектура московских ворот может рассматриваться как одна из важных составляющих формирования стиля русской архитектуры второй трети XVIII в. — периода, предшествующего времени расцвета стиля барокко в том варианте, как он сложился прежде всего, в произведениях Франческо Бартоломео Растрелли.
