The life and literary works of the Persian poet 'Ubaid-i Zakani: A study of the "Akhlaq al-ashraf" and the "Risala-yi ta'rifat" treatises

Abstract

’Убайд-и Закани - первый крупный сатирик в истории персидской литературы. Однако ввиду его противоречивой репутации среди филологов и литературоведов, его сочинения и биография не подвергались достаточному вниманию. В этой работе представлены сведения о биографии и сочинениях поэта на основе доступной справочной литературы, а также история изучения его фигуры востоковедами. Кроме того, для ознакомления читателей с произведениями ’Убайд-и Закани здесь рассмотрены два его сатирических трактата «Ахлак ал-ашраф» («Этика аристократии») и «Рисала-йи та’рифат».

’Ubayd-i Zakani is the first prominent satirist in the history of Persian literature. However, due to his contradictory reputation among philologists and theorists of literature his biography and literary heritage hasn’t been thoroughly studied. This research includes detailed information about poet’s life, his literary works based on accessible reference books, historical and literary research, and also evolution of exploration of ’Ubayid-i Zakani by orientalists. Besides, there is a review of two satirical treatises “Akhlaq al-ashraf” (“The ethics of the aristocrats”) and “Risala-yi ta’rifat” (“The definitions”) for the reader’s acquaintance with literary works of ’Ubayd-i Zakani.
