Developing of R&D Strategy Framework in Capital Intensive Industries

Abstract

Energy, mining, manufacturing and other capital intensive industries are often considered the backbone for regional industrial competitiveness, but lacking the will to adopt new technologies at a rate common for other type of industries. This is why common R&D management methods do not necessarily apply. In order to increase R&D efficiency and innovation capabilities, a novel R&D strategy framework is introduced and its effectiveness evaluated. The theoretical part of the thesis studies the contemporary literature around R&D strategies and management, identifying knowledge gaps in answer the research question. Key concepts for the analysis and managerial suggestions are also based on the best practices suggested by academia. In the empirical part a constructive single‐case study is carried out for the case company, answering the managerial needs identified during several director interviews. As a solution for both theoretical and managerial knowledge gaps, a framework for market pull oriented R&D management is composed. The framework identifies needs and pitfalls in terms of strategic collaboration, business processes, data, knowledge, key performance indicators and initiatives required to reach competitive advantage in the capital intensive markets.
