European civilization in Fyodor Dostoevsky's late essays (1873–1881)

Abstract

В данной работе рассматриваются представления Ф.М. Достоевского о европейской цивилизации. Показано, что они являлись не только отражением его литературного творчества – прежде всего, его религиозности и антирационализма - но и были закономерным развитием политической мысли России XIX века. Многие идеи, которые были высказаны писателем на страницах его публицистических статей и очерков, формулировались до него и богословами, и славянофилами и даже западниками, однако у Достоевского они приобрели особое звучание. Рассуждая о западной культуре, Достоевский отвергал этические основы европейского буржуазного общества, он осуждал стремление и желание европейцев быть самостоятельными и независимыми, почти равными Богу. В работе подробно рассматриваются основные вопросы, на которых писатель акцентировал внимание при описании западной цивилизации - мотив непонимания России Европой, вопросы природы буржуазной культуры и сущности католицизма.

The dissertation is devoted to the problem of Russia’s relationship with the West as represented in the work of Frydor Dostoyevsky. This motif, so prominent in the history of Russian social thought, is shown to be a recurrent topic in the writer’s work. It is observed that Dostoyevsky’s conception of the West is not only reflected in his literary works, where he channeled his religious beliefs and anti-rationalist ideas, but were a logical development of Russian political ideas of the late 19th century. Many of the ideas laid out in Dostoyevsky’s essays and non-fiction had previously been voiced by theologians, slavophiles and even westernisers, but acquired a new meaning in the writer’s works. In his essays on Western culture, Dostoyevsky renounced the ethical foundations of the European bourjeois society and condemned the Europeans’ to be individualistic and independent, almost equal to God. The paper discusses in detail the main problems raised in the author’s texts on the European civilization: the idea of Russian-European misunderstanding, the nature of European culture and Catholicism.
