The Hungarian costume in the second half of the fourteenth century on the miniatures of Chronica de gestis hungarorum

Abstract

The main peculiarities of the Hungarian fourteenth-century costume based on the miniatures of Chronica de gestis hungarorum by Mark Kálti (Képes krónika) are being considered in the article. The author analyzes the costume depictions on the manuscript’s miniatures, finds whether the depictions comply with the historical realities and also characterizes some of its national features, connected with historical and cultural peculiarities of the Hungarian kingdom’s development during the fourteenth century. Basing on the reviewed sources the author reveals the traits of an ethnical differentiation in Hungarian medieval costume, finds correlations with the West European gothic costume and the Turk Central Asian fourteenth century costume, gives an examples of the west European and the eastern elements’ intermingling and also marks the archaic traits, which are characteristic for the Hungarian costume of the age. It’s defined that the reviewed peculiarities are relevant for both male and female costume.
