Abstract
This work is dedicated to describing the emotive field of fear in F. K. Sologub's novel "The Petty Demon" and represents functional-semantic analysis of the emotive lexicon forming the field. Based on the comparison of the semantic volume of dictionary definitions of key words, the structural subdivision of the emotive field of fear into separate microfields —fear, fears, fright, apprehension, and horror — is substantiated. Special attention is given to the selection and analysis of emotive lexicon representing the semantics of the emotive microfields, considering the diversity of lexical and word-formation variants, including words from all parts of speech. The analysis is based on describing the semantic features and explicitly or implicitly expressed semantic attributes of the contextual variants of words within the emotive field of fear. The thesis examines emotives of varying intensity, representing both external and internal manifestations of emotions, conveying the character's subjective assessment, and reflecting the psychological state of the character in the novel. The dynamics and semantic uniqueness of emotives demonstrating the progressively distorted perception of reality in the character's consciousness are traced. The features of how the means of representing the emotion of fear function within the emotive space of the novel, identified during the study, have shown that the emotion of fear is a key motif of the entire novel on both the semantic and narrative levels, serving as the core of the text's emotive space and an important element of the main character's portrait characterization.
