The potential of using augmented reality technology in the urban space of St.Petersburg: virtualisation of street art in the AR Hunter application

Abstract

Уличное искусство сегодня – отражение современного города, порожденное социальными потрясениями, экономическим неравенством и протестными движениями. Стрит-арт – это форма и способ публичной коммуникации. Несмотря на то, что почти всегда уличное искусство вступает в противоречие с действующим законодательством и ему, как правило, не суждено долгое время находиться в городской среде, нельзя не отметить роль цифровых технологий и медиа в данном вопросе: они позволяют не только широко осветить, но и увековечить произведение уличного искусства. Так, петербургская арт-группа «Явь» создала приложение AR Hunter, позволяющее увидеть уничтоженные объекты стрит-арта точно в тех местах, где они были ранее, используя возможности технологии дополненной реальности. На примере данного приложения в работе рассмотрены перспективы применения технологии дополненной реальности в случае с объектами искусства и в городской среде.Nowadays Street art became a reflection of a modern city generated by social upheavals, economic inequality and protest movements. It is a form and method of public communication. Despite the fact that street art almost always comes into conflict with the current legislation and, as a fact, is not destined to stay in the urban environment for a long time, it is impossible not to notice the role of digital technologies and media in this issue. They allow wide illumination of the subject in the media as well as perpetuating the work of street art. Thus, the St. Petersburg art group "Yav" has created an AR Hunter application that allows to see the demolished street art objects exactly in the places where they were before, using the abilities of augmented reality technology. Based on this example, the paper considers the prospects of using augmented reality technology in the case of art objects and urban environment.
