Why has Thailand never been a colony?

Abstract

Данная выпускная квалификационная работа посвящена выявлению причин сохранения независимости Таиланда (Сиама) в эпоху развитого колониализма. Автор анализирует колониальную политику Англии и Франции в Юго-Восточной Азии в XIX — начале XX века, исследует особенности внутренней и внешней политики сиамских монархов указанного периода, а также рассматривает роль Российской Империи в разрешении «сиамского вопроса». В результате исследования выделяются три основные причины сохранения суверенитета страны – англо-французское соперничество в Индокитае, мудрая и дальновидная политика сиамских монархов, а также помощь и покровительство России.This graduation qualification work is devoted to revealing the reasons for the preservation of the independence of Thailand (Siam) during the period of European expansion in Southeast Asia. The author analyzes the colonial policy of Britain and France in Southeast Asia from the 19th until the beginning of 20th centuries, explores the peculiarities of domestic and foreign policies of the Siamese monarchs in that period, and also examines the role of Russian Empire in resolving the "the Siamese question". The study defines three main reasons for preserving of the independence and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Siam – Anglo-French rivalry in Indochina, the wise and far-sighted policy of Siamese monarchs, and the assistance and patronage of Russia.
