Abstract
The article is dedicated to an analysis of intensifying adverbs in the Swedish language and
the peculiarities of their translation into the Russian language. The research was based
on the novels written by contemporary Swedish writers S. Larsson and L. Marklund. The
author’s main goal is to find out the ways of rendering the high degree of intensity of the
attribute and the expressiveness via the expressive means of the Russian language. The
analysis of the research material has shown that the translation of Swedish intensifying
adverbs depends on the additional shades of meaning they carry. As a whole, the Russian
intensifying adverbs used in the translations are less semantically diverse and emotionally
coloured than the Swedish ones. This is attested to by the fact that in the translation
into Russian the adverb ‘оченьʼ (‘very’), the most commonly used intensifier in Russian,
signifying solely a high degree of manifestation of an attribute, and stylistically and emotionally
neutral, is used. The analysis of the translation has also led to a conclusion that intensifying adverbs are less actively used in the Russian language than in the Swedish
language. The Russian equivalent of a Swedish expression consisting of an intensifier
adverb and an emotionally neutral adjective is commonly solely an emotionally coloured
adjective. In a number of instances the Swedish intensifiers are not translated into Russian
at all.
