Means of expressing irony as a problem of translation: Evidence from contemporary British literature

Abstract

Магистерская диссертация посвящена исследованию языковых средств выражения иронии в британском романе, а также изучению передачи иронического смысла при переводе. В теоретическом разделе работы представлен обзор современных лингвистических теорий иронии, рассматриваются оценочный и когнитивный аспекты иронии, а также особенности перевода иронических высказываний. В практической части исследования предложена классификация средств реализации иронии, а также анализируются особенности перевода иронического смысла на русский язык.This thesis investigates the means of expressing irony in contemporary British fiction based on the novels Headlong by Michael Frayn and A History of the World in 10 and ½ Chapters by Julian Barnes as well as addressing the problems that arise when translating ironic meanings. Chapter 1 of the thesis reviews current linguistic theories of irony and examines the evaluative and cognitive aspects of this phenomenon. Chapter 2 proposes a classification of means employed in the two novels to express verbal irony and analyses the strategies used to translate ironic meanings from English into Russian.
