Periphrases as a translation problem from the lexical and stylistic perspective: Evidence from Estonian opinion-based discourse as illustrated by the Postimees newspaper

Abstract

Выпускная квалификационная работа "Лексические и стилистические трудности перевода перифразы в эстонском публицистическом тексте (по материалам газеты «Postimees»)" посвящена исследованию трудностей перевода на русский язык перифразы, представляющей собой неотъемлемую часть языка современных эстонских газет. Актуальность работы обусловлена необходимостью изучать особенности перевода публицистических текстов, являющихся одним из важнейших источников информации о событиях мира. Цель работы заключается в выявлении специфики перевода эстонской перифразы, в том числе трудностей перевода и наиболее подходящих переводческих стратегий для адаптации перифразы на русский язык. В ходе исследования была осуществлена тематическая классификация эстонских перифраз, позволившая охарактеризовать трудности перевода перифрастических оборотов исходя из особенностей структуры, принадлежности к определенному стилевому регистру и эмоционально-экспрессивной окраски. Кроме того, на основании выводов о лексических и стилистических свойствах перифраз были предложены рекомендации по выбору стратегий перевода эстонских перифрастических оборотов на русский язык, способные оказать практическую помощь начинающим переводчикам.

The graduation thesis “Periphrases as a translation problem from the lexical and stylistic perspective: Evidence from Estonian opinion-based discourse as illustrated by the Postimees newspaper” considers the problems of translating periphrases from the Estonian language into Russian. Being an effective technique of roundabout language, periphrases are widely used in the modern Estonian mass media and it is not always possible to translate them sticking to only one translation strategy. The purpose of the thesis was to analyze the peculiarities of transferring the Estonian periphrases into Russian, including highlighting the most acceptable translation strategies for different types of the Estonian periphrases. In order to do this the author systematized periphrases into five thematic groups and gave a thorough analysis of translation procedures used to transfer periphrases from Estonian into Russian. The periphrases were also investigated according to their structure, stylistic and lexical features and emotional colouring, which was aimed to give a better survey of the inevitable translation problems and translation procedures to solve them. This graduation thesis may be of great interest to all the translators working with the modern Estonian media texts.
