Novel in Arabic literature of diaspores in the USA and Great Britain at the end of the 20th - the beginning of the 21th centuries

Abstract

Работа Улангиной Анастасии Олеговны посвящена актуальной и малоизученной теме творчества авторов-эмигрантов в арабской литературе последних десятилетий. Задача настоящей работы – выявить основные характеристики арабоязычной литературы на территории США и Великобритании. С начала XX века эмиграция – одна из центральных социальных проблем арабского мира. Это результат многочисленных вооруженных конфликтов, а также социального и экономического неблагополучия в регионе, которые вынудили многих арабов поселиться в странах Запада, в том числе в США и Великобритании. В основу исследования легли работы шести выдающихся арабских писателей, на данный момент проживающих на территории этих государств: Синана Антуна, Мираль ат-Тахави, Махмуда Саида, Самуэля Шимона, Амджада Насира и Ханан аш-Шейх. В ходе работы были рассмотрены история и основные характеристики арабской диаспоры США и Великобритании, был проведен анализ рассматриваемых романов в контексте творческого пути каждого из писателей и освещены те проблемы, которые волнуют авторов в их произведениях. Работа состоит из введения, основных глав и заключения. В первой главе рассматривается понятие «диаспора», далее приводится обзор каждой из диаспор, а затем творческая биография писателей и анализ их произведений, в последней главе рассматриваются темы, затронутые писателями в их творчестве. Далее представлен список используемой литературы, который насчитывает порядка сорока наименований.

The research by Anastasia Ulangina is devoted to the distinctive features of Arabophone literature by Arab authors in the present day USA and Great Britain. Starting from the beginning of the twentieth century immigration became one of the central social issues for the Arabic world. This came as a result to numerous armed conflicts and common dissatisfaction with life in native countries that led many Arabs to the West; many of them became residents in the USA and Great Britain. The main goal of this study is to find out how change of residence influenced the work of writers, what are the main topics and problems that concern authors living outside their native environment and influenced both by their homeland’s culture and that of their new home. The research is based on works by six prominent Arabic authors, currently residing in the USA and the UK: Sinan Antoon, Miral al-Tahawy, Mahmoud Saeed, Samuel Shimon, Amjad Nasser and Hanan al-Shaykh. All the novels have been written in the last decade of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first centuries, thus presenting us with a latest view on the question in hand. The work consists of introduction, main chapters and conclusion. The first chapter examines the concept of ‘Diaspora’. Then the review of Arab Diasporas in the USA and Great Britain is given along with an overview of authors’ works and the novels’ analysis. The last chapter examines themes, represented in the novels. Next follows the bibliography, consisting of about 40 titles.
