The authors argue that throughout the existence of the Volgograd State Socio-Pedagogical University, the Russian language has always been among the main subjects of training the students, future teachers, since it is impossible to provide the necessary level of the educational process at school without it. The Department of the Russian Language at the Volgograd Pedagogical Institute was established in 1932. Prominent Soviet linguists V. A. Brim, M. F. Belyaev and others worked in it. During the Great Patriotic War, many students and teachers of the Department defended the country at the fronts, worked in the rear, contributing to the victory over the enemy, and the institute temporarily suspended work. In the post-war period, scholarly traditions were laid at the Department, which were continued in its subsequent history. The founder of the Volgograd Ethnolinguistic school is L. M. Orlov, the research in Russian dialectology was continued by R. I. Kudryashova, E. V. Brysina and others. The traditions of onomastic research were laid down by I. G. Dolgachev. The famous Russian onomatologist V. A. Nikonov in 1988 invited Volgograd researchers to organize a conference “Onomastics of the Volga region”, and since then the permanent organizing committee has been in Volgograd, and the conferences have become important events in the scholarly life of Russia. The foundations of linguodidactics and methods of teaching the Russian language, as well as derivatology were laid by the works of Z. A. Potikha. The phraseology of the Russian language was studied by N. F. Alefirenko, under whose leadership a school of phraseologists was created, which is now headed by K. I. Dekatova. A significant contribution to modern Russian studies is made by the works of V. P. Moskvin, T. N. Kolokoltseva, L. A. Shestak, M. F. Shatskaya, E. I. Aleshchenko, etc. The Department of the Russian Language has a successful combination of experienced and young scholars, there is a successfully operating postgraduate school, dissertations on Russian studies are regularly defended in the Dissertation Council. This serves as a guarantee for the further successful development of Russian studies at the Volgograd State Socio-Pedagogical University.en_GB
