Foreign Students' Image of Russia: a Culturological Analysis

Abstract

Преподаватели, психологи и специалисты по международным отношениям российских университетов опубликовали множество работ на различные темы, связанные с образом жизни иностранных студентовв России. Эти исследования занимают центральное место в рамках данного исследования, они были собраны и проанализированы с целью детального изучения процесса аккультурации латиноамериканских студентов и формирования образа России во всем мире. Таким образом, мы определяем вторичное исследование как метод, используемый для привлечения существующих данных, полученных из различных каналов, таких как журналы, материалы конференций и веб-страницы государственных учреждений, таких как studyinrussia.ru .

Изучить процесс формирования образа России и его потенциал как инструмента для понимания процесса аккультурации иностранных студентов. Образ понимается как элемент мировоззрения, которая находится в постоянном изменении и возникает в результате взаимосвязи факторов, задействованных при аккультурации.

According to the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, there are more than 250 thousand foreign students enrolled in Russian universities . As for the Latin American population: access to university education, a cultural experience overseas, and positive recommendations from fellow countrymen have been key aspects at the time of giving preference to the Russian Federation among many other potential countries. Therefore, it is significant to understand the phenomenon of the Latin Americans studying in Russian universities and how the image formation of the host country changes along the process of acculturation.

Teachers, psychologists and international relations specialists in Russian universities have published numerous works on different topics related with the lifestyle of Latin Americans in Russia. These studies are central to the body of this research, they were compiled and analyzed in order to examine in detail the acculturation process of Latin American students, and the formation of the image of Russia throughout. Thus, we define secondary research as the method used for involving existing data sourced from different channels such as journals, conference proceedings, and webpages of government institutions such as studyinrussia.ru.

Considering the Memorandum of Acculturation stated by Redfield, Linton and Herskovits, the term acculturation refers to the cultural changes originated in the authentic experiences when different cultures get in contact. In the second chapter, we will identify the main aspects that influence Latin American students to get interested, immerse, and show (full or partial) acceptance of Russian culture. To examine the process of image formation and its potential as a tool for understanding the acculturation process of foreign students.

Image is understood as a construct of the worldview which is in permanent change and comes as a result of the interrelation of the factors involved when acculturating.
