Showcases of the Paleontological and Stratigraphic Museum of St.Petersburg State University

Abstract

Диссертация посвящена исследованию истории формирования выставочного комплекса витрин Палеонтолого-стратиграфического музея СПбГУ, а также изучению их состояния и определению методов их отделки. Исследование является предреставрационным, и его основная цель – это выяснение старых технологий создания отделки для дальнейшего использования полученных результатов при реставрации отделочного слоя на поверхности витрин XIX в. из Палеонтологического музея в здании Двенадцати коллегий. Основная проблема при выполнении этих реставрационных работ заключается в том, что материалом облицовки указанных витрин, как и других видов мебели служебного назначения - распространенного в России XIX в. типа мебели, составляющего основу меблировки государственных учреждений, - является шпон ясеня, древесина которого имеет крупные поры. Такая особенность строения древесины вызывает большие сложности при отделке, если при работах не было уделено внимание устранению этого недостатка. В работе представлен анализ библиографических источников, на основании которого можно сделать некоторые выводы о техниках и материалах, использовавшихся в отечественной практике XIX в. для отделки мебели, с сохранением натурального вида древесины в готовом изделии и проявлении эстетических и защитных качеств поверхности. Кроме этого, в работе уделяется особое внимание методам отделки мебели из ясеня или с ясеневой облицовкой, с учетом описанной выше особенности строения древесины этой породы. Исследование также содержит историческую часть, посвященную изучению процесса формирования палеонтологического собрания в Университете и образованию его на базе под эти коллекции музея, история которого тесно связана с формированием в его рамках комплекса мебели экспозиционно-хранительского назначения.

The dissertation is devoted to the study of the history of the formation of the exhibition complex of showcases of the Paleontological and Stratigraphic Museum of St. Petersburg State University, as well as to the study of their condition and the determination of methods for their finishing. The study is pre-restoration, and its main goal is to find out the old technologies for creating finishes for further use of the results obtained in the restoration of the finishing layer on the surface of 19th century showcases. from the Paleontological Museum in the building of the Twelve Collegia. The main problem in carrying out these restoration works is that the facing material of these showcases, as well as other types of office furniture - common in Russia in the 19th century. The type of furniture that forms the basis of furnishing state institutions is ash veneer, the wood of which has large pores. This feature of the structure of wood causes great difficulties in finishing, if during the work attention was not paid to eliminating this drawback. The paper presents an analysis of bibliographic sources, on the basis of which it is possible to draw some conclusions about the techniques and materials used in domestic practice in the 19th century for finishing furniture, while maintaining the natural look of wood in the finished product and the manifestation of the aesthetic and protective qualities of the surface. In addition, the paper pays special attention to the methods of finishing furniture made of ash or with ash veneer, taking into account the structural features of this wood species described above. The study also contains a historical part devoted to the study of the process of formation of a paleontological collection at the University and its formation on the basis of these museum collections, the history of which is closely connected with the formation of a furniture complex for exposition and storage purposes within its framework.
